Background

In keeping with UCLA's longstanding commitment to providing an up-to-date and effective instructional environment, the 188 General Assignment (GA) classrooms have been one of Facilities Management's top priorities. During the 1980s, the classrooms underwent initial refurbishment and intensified routine maintenance to complement and improve their appearance.

Refurbished in 1996, Dodd 147 is a large capacity, full media auditorium. It is air conditioned, wheelchair accessible and features a raised stage.

New Refurbishment Program

Continuing heavy use of the GA classrooms together with new air conditioning, multi-media and computer connectivity (linking the classrooms to the campus backbone network) requirements led to the establishment of a new GA Classroom Refurbishment Program in 1993-94. The Program focuses on creating optimum teaching/learning environments for faculty and students.

Franz Hall 1178, refurbished in 1995, seats 293 students.

Specific Program objectives include replacement of floors, seats, ceilings, lighting, sound attenuation surfaces and writing boards; upgrading ventilation and air conditioning systems; and modernizing multi-media equipment. Computer connectivity installation in GA Classrooms was introduced into the Program in 1994-95.

In addition, Facilities Management works collaboratively with a number of campus departments to develop and execute Program goals. We coordinate with:

Capital Programs on building retrofit projects to maximize use of
campus resources

Communications Technology Services on computer connectivity
installation
The Office of Instructional Development on media upgrades
The Registrar's Office on scheduling classrooms for refurbishment

Representatives of these groups meet monthly to coordinate classroom refurbishment projects and to consult on design and equipment for classrooms in new construction projects. Throughout the design process, we also seek and receive faculty input. Throughout the design process, we seek and receive faculty input.

Single Building Strategy

To maximize resources and efficiency, the GA Classroom Refurbishment Program makes use of a single building strategy whereby all such classrooms in a single building are refurbished at the same time. Classroom distribution at UCLA facilitates the strategy; 82% of GA Classrooms are located in only nine campus buildings:

- Boelter
- Bunche
- Dodd
- Haines
- Kinsey
- Math Sciences
- Public Policy
- Rolfe
- Royce
This seminar room in the Public Policy Building, refurbished in 1995, is typical of the seminar rooms in that building.

Status of the Refurbishment Program Since 1993-94

92% of GA Classrooms currently in use have been completely refurbished over the past ten years (new floors, seats, ceilings, lighting, sound attenuation surfaces and writing boards).

92% of GA Classrooms currently in use have computer connectivity installed (four dedicated, 10 Mbps ports in the presentation areas and the bandwidth equivalent to two other dedicated 100 Mbps ports per 40 seats).
70% of GA Classrooms with media have undergone upgrades or had new media installed. Most of the projectors and other equipment in these rooms are less than 2-1/2 years old. More information about the media equipment installed in these rooms can be found at http://www.oid.ucla.edu/avs/Buildings/all_rooms.htm.
93% of GA Classrooms currently in use are now air conditioned.
During the summer of 2001, the 18 GA Classrooms in Boelter Hall were completely refurbished and fitted with connectivity. In Summer 2002, Geology 3656 and Young 4216 were refurbished and fitted with connectivity.

Next GA Classroom Refurbishment Phase

In conjunction with the seismic retrofit and remodeling of Kinsey, Kaufman and Dickson (Broad) the 16 GA classrooms in those buildings will be refurbished and fitted with connectivity. Kaufman and Broad are currently under construction. Kaufman is scheduled for completion Summer 2004 and Broad in Winter 2005. Kinsey will be under construction from January 2004 to January 2006.

During 2004 five new classrooms will be added to the GA roster in the new Physics and Astronomy Building. Three new classrooms will be added in LaKretz Hall in 2005, in part as replacement for the classroom wing of the Life Science Buillding, which was demolished.

Botany 325, a medium capacity classroom, has both auditoria and loose tablet arm seating.
